The Journey

The diverse landscapes of this mountain create a journey of many parts. Our route starts steeply as we climb upwards towards a sparsely wooded valley. As the path levels out we enjoy views of dramatic corries before the final ascent of the rocky summit.

As we walk we move over a variety of rocks through which we will gain an understanding of how the landscape formed and the powerful forces that built these mountains. This story explains the formation of Stob Ban but much of it can also be applied to understanding the geology of the mountains found across the North and West Highlands.

By the end of this journey you will be able to identify the key rock types found in this area, understand how they were formed and therefore will be able to interpret the landscape around you. You’ll now notice many similar features in other walks around the Fort William area. We will also explore how the Gaelic language can help us understand these places and take a moment to reflect on the people of the glen.

“What a great day! Everything was pitched at just the right level and kept a mixed group engaged and having fun despite the typically changeable Scottish weather. I learnt so much about an area I thought I knew. We’ll be back’
